Take the Body and Run (Macey Malloy Mysteries Book 1) by Jada Ryker (Amazon, Goodreads)

Break out your knives and forks, my literary foodies, as we have a particular treat to dig into today! Branded as a murder mystery with a chick-lit twist, the recipe for today’s dish was chosen as the winner of the 2016 Kindle Scout program, so we must be in for some high dining tonight, yes? A dash of mystery, the spice of a thrilling murder, and the flavor of women’s fiction, there should be a lot of promise here, especially with such a sterling superlative added to it. But will that turn out to be the case?

Before we solve that mystery, let us go through the files for the Starving Review regulations:

  1. I attempt to rate every book from the perspective of a fan of the genre
  2. I attempt to make every review as spoiler-free as possible

Political Writing: A Little Clarification

I want to clarify something. Maybe this is simply a way for me to think ‘out loud’, but …

As a patriotic American, I certainly recognize the legitimacy of the President-elect. Donald Trump will wind up being our next President. I will obviously show the proper respect to the office of the President so in that sense, he is ‘my President’.

But me, along with many others, can also rightfully claim that he is ‘not our President’, in the sense that, by his own words and statements in regard to his plans as President, Donald Trump does not even begin to represent our beliefs, our goals, or even seem to care about our basic rights to happiness, freedom, and human dignity.

It’s simple, perhaps, to look at my profile picture and assume that I’m simply a white cis guy who has no dog in the fight. But I may be white and I may be a guy, but I am not ‘cis’ or ‘straight’ or ‘heterosexual’ or whatever word you want to use.

So there, for those of you that might be wondering how people can say that Trump is ‘not their President’ and still be patriots who respect the republic of the United States, that’s how.

Book/General/Convention News: The Big Update!

Okay, time to pull away some curtains to reveal what all has been taking up so much of my time. INITIATE THE BULLET POINTS!

  • New print editions of The Push Chronicles, all three books, are coming out soon in the more popular 5 x 8 inch format, graced with brand-new spine and back cover design by Reyn Ruch, the cover artist of The Songstress Murders, to make the new editions much nicer to have sitting on your shelf!
  • Speaking of The Songstress Murders, you can read a fresh review HERE. Also, Reyn did an updated cover design and art for Inspector Redmane’s first adventure, so check it out as well!
  • You may have noticed that I have once again become a fully independent author, with The Opening Bell back under my full control and republished on Amazon. The price is back to something reasonable ($2.99 USD as opposed to 6.99) and you Kindle Unlimited folks can now read it for free! The new print edition will be available soon, with the original Felipe de Barros cover art and extra cover design for the print edition by Reyn Ruch as well.
  • As the series is back in my hands, let me announce that The Tale of the Tape, fully revised with extended material, will be available for pre-order soon. The release proper will be in early August. I will announce the precise date within the week!
  • In addition to Kansas City Comic Con in early August, I am proud to announce that I will also be appearing at the Pensacola Comic Convention in late August at the Game Space table. I’ll not only be there with my books and witty conversation, but assisting in gaming demos and the like.
  • Also, I’ll be making an appearance at Necronomicon 2016 in Tampa, Florida, right before Halloween! It should be an incredible experience!
  • Finally, expect one more big announcement soon about the Sekrit Writin Projikt very soon!  All I will say now is that 1 done, 2 to go!

I’ll be posting details of the new print edition covers over the week and more, so stay tuned!  Maybe even a book review!

Until then, good reading, good writing, and good luck!

General News:Yeah, It’s Been Slow a.k.a. Apologies and Delays!

There’s not too much to say here. If you’ve been following the blog, you know it’s been dead here. For good reasons, yes, but it just goes to show the problems with being an indie author at times. Even when busy with writing, no matter how busy, there still needs to be updates and a real presence here, just to keep the promotional momentum!

So let me at least add some vital updates:

  • I hope to get reviews worked back in soon, but that mainly hinges on the outcome of the next few days.
  • As to what has occupied so much of my time lately, I still can’t reveal too many details, but I can say that I’m under contract for co-writing a trilogy of urban fantasy books, all to be released (hopefully) this year.
  • Which basic math and time sense tells you why I am stupid, crazy busy.
  • Add to this some possible big changes in other releases (new and old) and things turn to INSANITY LEVELS!
  • At the least, expect more writing articles and podcasts to come in the weeks ahead!

For those of you still hanging in there, thank you for your continued support and expect things to move forward now. Stay tuned for more release information to come soon enough!

Until next time, good reading, good writing, and good luck!

Monday Musings: MobiCon 2016 After-Action Report!

Well, we are back safe and sound from Mobicon 2016 and it was quite a blast!

I certainly feel like the whole ‘baptism-of-fire’ thing has come and gone. There are certainly things I could have done better, both in planning and in execution, but I’ve been lucky to have gotten tons of advice from my fellow local authors. All in all, things felt like they went well and I certainly felt like I hit a certain groove by late Friday.

The big things I learned to improve on for the future:

  • Get prepared EVEN SOONER. It allows for greater flexibility and fiscal planning.
  • Branded tat! I knew this ahead of time, but I failed to take full advantage due to some last minute changes of planning and unexpected front-end expenses.
  • Incorporate some more three-dimensionality in the displays, both to improve table use and to help catch eyes.

So the next confirmed con visit is Kansas City Comic Con in August! More info and updates to come!

Monday Musings: It’s Almost Time! a.k.a. Mobicon This Weekend

Right, so it’s almost time.  Now, I’ve been to conventions before, even been to conventions for ‘business’ reasons.  The last two Pensacons I’ve attended have been more for promotion and networking than just for the fun of it.  Mobicon, though, will be the first time I’ll be sitting at a table, trying to get you to buy my books.

It’s a step forward, but it’s a step on uncertain ground.  At least psychologically, this could be a make-or-break moment.  It’s one thing to sit back, behind the shield of the internet, and excuse away any lack of success or moments of failure as there’s a certain distance involved.  This, though, will be personal, face-to-face, nitty-gritty.  Basically, this is where I either grow up or drop out.

Well, not so dramatic as that, of course!  While this is a stressful moment, it would also be short sighted to lay everything on one convention, especially my first!  No, while this will remain a big step, it’s entirely a step forward, a step in the right direction.  At worst, it will be a learning experience, letting me know what I need to do for future conventions.  At best, I’ll come home with empty book boxes and the knowledge that I’m doing things the right way.  Either way, it’ll be fun!

In other quick news, my free promotion for Indomitable went like gangbusters.  Just a reminder, though, that all of The Push Chronicles are available for free through Kindle Unlimited.  If you have that, swing by my Released Books list and start reading!  Also, don’t forget that The Songstress Murders will be released at the start of Mobicon!  You can still pre-order your Kindle copy from Amazon.  Physical copies will be available for order around the time of the e-book release.

Until next time, good reading, good writing, and good luck!

Weekend Update: Busy Is As Busy Does a.k.a. About The Lack of Updates

Yes, I’m a bit … well … a full week behind schedule.

I know it’s horrible of me.  That’s a book review and a writing article I owe you fine people, but trust me in that I will make good on my debts.  The reasons for my tardiness are, at least, pure ones.

The final edits and cover art for The Songstress Murders are just about done.  I will let you fine people know when pre-orders will be available (yes, despite the fact that it was horribly clunky last time, I’m going to try it again!) with the official debut to coincide with Mobicon at the end of May.  Expect a few articles about it and a revised sneak peek to hit this blog in the coming weeks!

Also, a lot of prep work has been laid this past week for my big convention debuts, which of course means a lot of time away from the keyboard.  In the coming weeks, the rest of my stock will come in and I should have some fun pictures to share of the promotional material as it comes in.  Hopefully it will wet your whistle!

In addition, expect some additional pages to be added to the site in the coming week.  At the very least, a live appearances page will go up, with listings  of all my convention stops and a link page (yes, much delayed!) with links to fellow authors I collaborate with or particularly like and other things, such as local Pensacola businesses you can buy my books at.

So, yes, the party is about to start back up!  Sorry for leaving y’all in the cold for so long!
