Scion of Conquered Earth (SCION Book 1) by Michael J. Allen (Amazon, Goodreads)

Good morning, my literary foodies! Today, I have another fresh review served up piping hot from the pantry, this time a dystopian YA space opera, Scion of Conquered Earth by Michael J. Allen. Such a mix of ingredients should lead to a tasty genre fusions as long as everything is baked properly, but it could just as easily turn sour. Does Mr. Allen succeed in the kitchen?

Before we find out, let’s renew our pledge to the Starving Review principles:

  1. I attempt to rate every book from the perspective of a fan of the genre
  2. I attempt to make every review as spoiler-free as possible

Starving Double Review: Durable Impressions and Certain Hypothetical (Slowpocalypse Books 0.5 and 1) by James Litherland

Durable Impressions (Amazon, Goodreads) and Certain Hypothetical (Amazon, Goodreads) (Slowpocalypse Books 0.5 and 1) by James Litherland

It’s a two course meal on the table today, my foodies!  A double-shot of near-future dystopian eating, Durable Impressions is a small appetizer, setting us up for the main course of Certain Hypothetical.  As the first is so short and is meant specifically as the lead-in to the second, I’ll be giving my review as one complete meal, with one final rating to wrap up the whole dish.

Now before we get to that review, let’s recite the Starving Review oath:

  2. I attempt to make every review as spoiler-free as possible’

Prometheus Stumbles (Dreamworld Book 1) by Ed Gosney (Amazon, Goodreads)

Time to crack the knuckles and dig into the pantry for this week’s Starving Review!  For this week’s literary treat, we have a recipe mixed with fantasy, spiritualism, a slightly dystopian future, and blue plastic turtles.  Mmm, more cooking from the fusion genre kitchen!  Of course, we still need to peel away some layers of this pie to see if the filling is as good as it looks from the outside.

Before we start cutting, let us recite the Starving Review creed:

  1. I attempt to rate every book from the perspective of a fan of the genre
  2. I attempt to make every review as spoiler-free as possible.

Book News: The Secret Project is officially begun!

For some time now, I’ve been collaborating closely with my cover artist and good friend, Felipe de Barros, on a SECRET PROJECT.  The time has come for that project to be unveiled!

Doppel, a postmodern adventure of altered perceptions, societal controls, and what it means to be human, takes us into the near-now, the year 2025, into the seemingly perfect life of Dr. Alex Turing. Living in the Blue States, a seeming Utopia, a fateful decision and a chance encounter throw back the veil and plunge Alex into the midst of the plots of MARK, the supercomputer that controls the entire Blue, an adventure that will change the course of the world.

This graphic novel tale is from Felipe’s conceptions and ideas and combines his fantastic art with my writing.  Check it out at Webtoons and please rate it based on what you see.  The Prologue is now live with Chapter 1 to follow soon!
