Blood Curse (Waves of Darkness Book 1) by Tamara A. Lowery (Amazon, Goodreads)

You know, for post-holiday literary cravings, one could do worse than pick up some fresh seafood. That being the case, that’s exactly what I did! Today’s literary meal is a spicy bit of historical fiction set during the Golden Age of Piracy. Magic, vampires, creatures, pirates, and rum are the promises of the day in Blood Curse so let’s hit the waves and see it the meal is as filling as it promises!

Before we tip back the rum barrel, let us swear our oaths to the rules of the Starving Review:

  1. I attempt to rate every book from the perspective of a fan of the genre
  2. I attempt to make every review as spoiler-free as possible

Starving Review: AlterWorld (Play to Live Book 1) by D. Rus

AlterWorld (Play to Live Book 1) by D. Rus (Amazon, Goodreads)

The world of literary cuisine is constantly shifting, flowing, and adapting with new sub-genres popping up all the time. One of the newest in the science-fiction and fantasy recipe book is being called the LitRPG. Concerned with merging concepts of virtual reality, video game role-playing games, and other sci-fi concepts, it is a cuisine I’ve heard of and sampled in its ur-examples, such as Sword Art Online and Ready Player One, I have yet to take a bite out of the vast array of other meals that have spawned in their wake. Today, we’ll find out exactly how well one of the most prominent of those meals, AlterWorld by Russian chef D. Rus, matches up to those previous meals.

Before we log in and strap on our swords, let’s take a look at the Starving Review Wiki:

  1. I attempt to rate every book from the perspective of a fan of the genre
  2. I attempt to make every review as spoiler-free as possible

The Steamkettle Kids Save The Day! (The Legends and Adventures of Industralia Part 1) by Lori Alden Holuta (Amazon, Goodreads)

It has been a busy week at Starving Author LLC but I guaranteed a review and thus it shall be! To accommodate my busy eating schedule, today’s Starving Review will be for a little treat of a children’s meal, a one-course snack that comes out of the steampunk kitchen of previous Starving Review chef, Lori Alden Holuta. Will today’s meal match up to previous bites or will it be insufficient to quiet my stomach grumbles?

Before we find out, remember to check the factory rules and be safe at reviewing:

  1. I attempt to rate every book from the perspective of a fan of the genre
  2. I attempt to make every review as spoiler-free as possible

Starving Review: Heirs to Eternity by Eka Waterfield

Heirs to Eternity by Eka Waterfield (Amazon)

A rarity here, my foodies, as I must start this review with a bit of full DISCLOSURE: I performed editorial work for this particular title.

That being said, let’s begin. The urban fantasy genre is a big one, growing larger by the day, and it may seem that most every flavor available for that genre has been tried out already. If you said that, you’d likely be right. However, as we all know, it isn’t the particular flavors in a recipe but how they are blended and mixed that makes the dish. Does Heirs to Eternity find that proper blend or is it wildly overspiced?

Before we take a taste, let’s examine the Staving Review kitchen guidelines:

  1. I attempt to rate every book from the perspective of a fan of the genre
  2. I attempt to make every review as spoiler-free as possible

Starving Review: Ambrosia by the Sea (By The Sea Book 1) by Traci Hall

Ambrosia by the Sea (By The Sea Book 1) by Traci Hall (Amazon)

There are times, my literary foodies, that we have to sit back and enjoy life’s simpler pleasures. While we may often pine for ground-breaking and complex genre fusions and intense deconstructive works, what we don’t realize is that often all we want is a good meal, even if it is a deceptively simple one. Today’s meal has the aroma of just such a meal. A straightforward, character-driven, contemporary romance, there are no implications of vast complexity in Ambrosia by the Sea, so let’s see if simple is best in today’s review.

Before we discover the truth, let us check the Starving Review rules:

  1. I attempt to rate every book from the perspective of a fan of the genre
  2. I attempt to make every review as spoiler-free as possible

Starving Review: Yesterday’s Tomorrow (Tomorrow’s War Book 1) by G.W. Pomichter and William DuPree

Yesterday’s Tomorrow (Tomorrow’s War Book 1) by G.W. Pomichter and William DuPree (Amazon, Goodreads)

Ah, alternate history recipes! What can’t you do? From Nazis with spaceships to Ben Franklin summoning dragons, alternate history meals can present all sorts of bizarre scenarios … and quite a few starkly realistic ones. That is the intent of today’s meal, to show an alternate contemporary environment, diverging only a short time before the present day and trying to stay fiercely grounded in the real and natural. Does Yesterday’s Tomorrow capture the essence of realism and push forward this alternate history?

Before we find out, let us take the Starving Review oath:

  1. I attempt to rate every book from the perspective of a fan of the genre
  2. I attempt to make every review as spoiler-free as possible

Take the Body and Run (Macey Malloy Mysteries Book 1) by Jada Ryker (Amazon, Goodreads)

Break out your knives and forks, my literary foodies, as we have a particular treat to dig into today! Branded as a murder mystery with a chick-lit twist, the recipe for today’s dish was chosen as the winner of the 2016 Kindle Scout program, so we must be in for some high dining tonight, yes? A dash of mystery, the spice of a thrilling murder, and the flavor of women’s fiction, there should be a lot of promise here, especially with such a sterling superlative added to it. But will that turn out to be the case?

Before we solve that mystery, let us go through the files for the Starving Review regulations:

  1. I attempt to rate every book from the perspective of a fan of the genre
  2. I attempt to make every review as spoiler-free as possible
