Convention News: Pensacon Day 1: A New Con Hope

Day one of Pensacon 2016 is a wrap for me!  I talked to a lot of great people (big props to the always delightful S. Usher Evans, the ever tall Dave Butler, and all the great local authors that didn’t have their business cards so my poor memory doesn’t remember by name), had my picture taken a lot, and fought my newly (and poorly) designed straps.

Needless to say, the sandwich board is under repairs as we speak to get ready for day 2!  There are still plenty of prizes left to hand out and the SPECIAL prize is still to be grabbed!

Hope to see you tomorrow!

Convention News: The Weapons of Convention War! a.k.a. The Pensacon Sandwich Boards!

Without further ado, in all of their sidewalk-stumbling, doomsday-saying, dive-bar-advertising glory are the new and improved (for 2016!) Pensacon sandwich boards:

Beautiful, right?  It is by these boards you will know me as I walk among the people and, by recognizing me and then approaching me with word of this blog, my reviews, or my books, you will be sown with the finest prizes a Starving Author can bestow.

Well, it sounded great until the end, right?

Seriously, though, I do have some nifty little things to give out and the first truly special soul who impresses me with their wit, charm, or slavish fanpersonism, will get something pretty nifty on top of the usual stuff.

Expect regular updates during the con and also at least one Starving Review on Thursday!

I hope to see you there!

Monday Musings: Countdown to Convention! a.k.a. Pensacon Rising!

So the materials have been bought and the grand sandwich board construction begins tomorrow.  For those of you who haven’t caught wind yet, Pensacon 2016 begins on Friday and you can find yours truly there for all three wonderful days.  There are tons of great guests, an expansive vendor floor, and everything you’d expect from a top-notch event.

Now, in the next day or so, I’ll post up a picture of the completed board and my planned outfit.  If you seek me out during Pensacon and bring up the Starving Author blog or any of my books, I’ve got some special gifts to hand out.  There’s even a small chance you could be the one to win a very special prize, so impress me with your knowledge, slavish devotion, or raw humor!

See you there!

Monday Musings: The Quest For Sandwiches! a.k.a. Ethical Guerilla Advertising

The proper construction of a walking advertising prop is serious business.  It has to be lightweight yet sturdy, comfortable yet stable, and all of that.  The thing that I’m having to consider the most, though, is the exact nature of the message.

You see, I am a strong proponent of certain ethical boundaries.  My reviews are always scrupulously honest, I always try to keep my word, and all that sappy stuff.  So I find myself wondering just how far I should push my guerilla advertising.

Other authors and vendors have had to pay a fair bit more for the privilege of hawking their goods at the convention.  While you can argue that my pass cost isn’t that much less than an author’s alley spot with far less amenities, that pass was purchased with the implication of being a consumer, not a vendor.  So where should I draw the line?

I’m sure I’ll find an acceptable balance, as I did last year, but if you have any thoughts, feel free to let me know.  I welcome your comments and suggestions!

Until next time, good reading, good writing, and good luck!

Weekend Update: Sandwich Making a.k.a. Guerilla Marketing and You!

Just a quick update from Starving Author LLC headquarters, here in sunny (if cold) Pensacola:

  • I have a client and half (it makes sense to me!) book in the Starving Editor offices, but that leaves plenty more room for your fellow starving authors out there to engage my services!
  • There is a wealth of resources on the Internet for the making of wearable sandwich boards.  Gods bless the information superhighway!
  • Maybe this year I’ll be able to spring like a jaguar and actually GET A TABLE FOR PENSACON! … Seriously, I tried this year, but they sold out in, like, a month, well before I had the cash on hand.
  • If you’re an author in the same position (going to a con but unable to wrangle a table), you can still advance yourself.  Other authors and publishers are usually more than willing to talk shop.  If you make yourself identifiable in some way, you can still meet and engage with readers.  Or you can do what I do: all of the above, plus be a walking advert.  Your mileage may vary!
  • The Songstress Murders is still coming!  Editing is taking a bit of time to wrangle and the cover artist had a surgery to endure.  She’s okay and work is back on track, but it delayed the whole mess.  Still, I think it may be my best book yet, so it should be worth the wait.
  • You’re awesome!  If no one has told you that today, I’m your guy.

I think that about covers it.  Time to get back to the books I intend to review next Friday.  Until next time, good reading, good writing, and good luck!

Convention News: Hometown Action! a.k.a. Pensacon On My Mind

It’s less than a month away.  Pensacon 2016 is just about here and, obviously, I’ll be there.  I had sincerely hoped to have a full-on table this year, but the city itself has yet to really give the convention a venue worthy of its size.  To translate that into relevant facts, all the convention tables, both sales and writer’s alley, were sold out in mere weeks after the convention, way too fast for me to grab one.

So that means it will be time once again to break out the sandwich boards to spread the good word!  Though I will be sporting new, improved Sandwich v2.0 boards for comfort, here’s a picture from last year to give you an idea:

Sweet, right?

More importantly, if anyone out there attends and tracks me down, tell me the name of my review column and there will be a reward in it for you!  What is it?  You’ll have to find out!  Hope to meet you in the flesh there!
